solo exhibition at Panorama (Venice, Italy / 2024)
Text and curated by Giovanni Giacomo Paolin
Aiko Shimotsuma's work moves between the material and the imaginary, playing with the limits of personal perception. Within Panorama, two site-specific installations are in dialog, Horizon II (temporary) and Feeling is all, offering the visitors a space of thought that can also be felt from outside the three big windows. For her first solo exhibition in Venice, the artist repurposes Horizon II (temporary) and adopts a new formal device: historical Murano glass objects found in an archive. The installation, placed near the window of Panorama, lends itself to the gaze of passers-by, creating a shared experience in which the differences in interpretation create a form of relationship. Feeling is all, on the other hand, finds a new conformation in relation to the space in which it is presented, generating ephemeral forms that are revealed among different materialities. Pale Boundaries is an exhibition atmospherically linked to the lagoon environment, evoking different densities and sensations that can be experienced in contact with water, mist and silence.
